Two of the hottest artists of their generation, Gilbert Stuart and Damien Hirst, now have works on display—thanks to two separate loans—at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Museum visitor can come to see the 1797 portrait of America’s founding father, titled “George Washington (The Constable-Hamilton Portrait)” by Stuart and 2004’s “End Game” by iconoclast Hirst through the end of next year. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is located at 1001 Bissonnet St. Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and 12:15 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday. India Fest 2006 takes place today at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenue De Las Americas, from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. The festival commemorates the country’s independence from British rule on Aug. 15, 1947. Visitors can enjoy dancing, a parade, music, native fashions, a bit of history and food during this event. Officials with the Gulf Coast Archive and Museum of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender History will presents their monthly history series today at the Houston GLBT Community Center, 3400 Montrose Blvd. at Hawthorne St., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the large meeting room. Guest speaker will be transgender activist Vanessa Edwards Foster. Jimmy Carper will interview Foster about her life and work as a local transgender-rights activist. MONDAY | AUG. 21

Bering Memorial Community Services is seeking volunteers to work at their Adult Day Care Center, 1429 Hawthorne St. Volunteers are needed to work for three to four hours a day, on any weekday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Duties will include greeting visitors, clients and staff members, answering phones and directing calls where necessary, providing emotional support to clients, preparing meals, and other compassionate services for people living with HIV/AIDS.
